Esophagitis CT Findings

  • Intramural circumferential hypodense area
  • Peripheral rim enhancement
  • Wall thickening > 5mm
  • Mucosal enhancement
  • Low attenuation (target sign)
  • May have air bubbles if ulcerated

Etiology:

  • Acid reflux or chronic vomiting
  • Allergies
  • Infections
  • Radiation
  • Certain medications

Epidemiology:

  • Everyone is susceptible to esophagitis

Presentation:

  • Throat and/or chest pain
  • Heartburn
  • Dysphagia
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Feeling of something stuck in the throat

Prognosis:

  • Esophagitis can be treated and/or managed
