3. If a patient has thyroid disease is iodinated contrast contraindicated?
The ACR "Manual on Contrast Media Version 6.0" addressed two specific situations:
Patients with Hyperthyroidism
Patients with Thyroid Cancer
Some patients with hyperthyroidism or other thyroid disease (especially those who live in iodine-deficient areas) may develop iodine-provoked delayed hyperthyroidism. This effect may appear 4 to 6 weeks after the intravascular contrast administration in some of these patients. This can occur after the administration of any iodinated contrast media. It is usually self-limited.
