This chapter is devoted to current and emerging techniques in gastrointestinal (GI) imaging. Using signs for diagnosis and prognosis requires knowledge of the mechanism of their appearance and the observed pathological conditions. In this chapter, some of the more common and useful radiologic signs of the GI with relevant images and their use in differential diagnosis are demonstrated. Despite classically being described for a single disease, or a closely related family of disorders, most indications are not restricted exclusively to their traditional definition. Some radiologic signs named because of their resemblance to the occurrences in the natural world are discussed. Developments in imaging technology have led to many improvements in the field of diagnostic GI radiology. Accurate and rapid diagnostic imaging for the appropriate management of acute GI conditions also is essential. This chapter highlights the current function and advances of imaging techniques with new diagnostic and prognostic information pertinent to GI. The continuing developments in CT and MRI technology can further improve the accuracy of imaging applications.
