• Interpretation of CT Colonographic Images: Should We Rely on Nonradiologists?1

Optical colonoscopy is primarily performed by gastroenterologists, and radiologists interpret computed tomographic (CT) scans-this is a fundamental precept in current clinical practice and is required for billing and risk management. A new study, motivated by limitations in manpower and con-cerns regarding costs, tests the ability of nonradiologists to read CT colonographic images (1). Physician extenders, especially physician assistants and advanced practice nurses, have assumed physician roles in other areas of medicine, whereas radiologist extenders are uncommon-especially in the United States. The study by de Haan et al (1) tested the ability of technologists who used various reader paradigms to interpret CT colonographic images, a concept that may facilitate successful implementation of CT colonography for colorectal cancer screening.
