Compared with the portal veins, the hepatic veins have received less attention in the radiology literature. Therefore, radiologists may not be as familiar with hepatic vein abnormalities. As the population of patients who are imaged for liver disease in our institution continues to grow, we are encountering hepatic vein disorders more frequently in a variety of clinical settings. In this article, we review the cross-sectional imaging features of normal hepatic veins and describe a number of abnormal processes that may alter their appearance. Because sonography is widely used to screen for vascular abnormalities of the liver, we emphasize this technique for imaging of the hepatic veins. Intervention techniques that have proven useful in the treatment of hepatic vein disorders are also presented.
