• Helical CT of Cervical Spine and Soft Tissue Injuries of the Neck

Helical CT has been a major improvement in the evaluation of trauma patients. When compared with singe-section CT, specific advantages that benefit acutely ill and severely traumatized patients include faster acquisition and image reconstruction times, optimal utilization of contrast material for vascular enhancement, reduction of motion and misregistration artifacts, and higher quality of reformatted and three-dimensional reconstructed images. In the patient subjected to multiple trauma, assessment of several body regions can be completed in a relatively short time. Patients can be rapidly returned to their treatment area because additional scanning after the initial acquisition is avoided by the ability to generate overlapping images from the original volumetric data set. In our institution, a level I trauma center with over 3400 admissions per year, helical CT has become routine for the evaluation or injuries in varied clinical situations.
