Breast screening is seen as an ideal candidate for the application of artificial intelligence (AI) because it involves large volumes of image data and a simple outcome: a cancer is either present or not. As more trials of AI products demonstrate accuracy comparable with human readers, it is impossible to ignore the pressure to adopt AI. But even if we agree that AI is ready for breast screening, we still need to ask whether the services that deliver breast screening are ready for AI.
