When articles on CT scans or other medical imaging studies involving x-rays associated with an increased risk of cancer are published [1], the media outlets pick them up fast. In the majority of instances, the media frequently comes out with catchy phrases such as “We are giving ourselves cancer” [2] or “The surprising dangers of CT scans and x-rays” [3]. The immediate reaction from professional societies such as the ACR, the RSNA, or the American Association of Physicists in Medicine is often muted in the media because often their position statements go to lengths arguing that the study estimating the risks is flawed and so forth.
