Over the past two centuries, medical science has seen enormous advances in the development of diagnostic modalities and novel treatment options. However, the impact on health care outcomes from these advances is contingent on the timely and efficient delivery of health care in actual patient settings. Communication among health care workers is one important aspect of the efficient and effective delivery of health care to hospitalized patients [1]. This is even more important in critical care settings, in which high-risk decisions are made quickly and frequently, and these can directly determine the fate of a patient [2].
