Summary: With recent advances in dual-source dual-energy computed tomography (CT), high-quality diagnostic images can now be acquired while reducing the level of ionizing radiation. In this review article, the authors evaluate techniques, including the use of a single contrast-enhanced acquisition to yield unenhanced and contrast-enhanced CT data. Dual-energy postprocessing may increase diagnostic accuracy in evaluating the abdominal organs and viscera and enables radiation-dose neutrality, relative to conventional single-energy CT.
