Cross Sectional Imaging Fellowships

Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions

Thank you for your interest in the cross-sectional imaging fellowships at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. The primary mission of the fellowships is to provide superior clinical training in MR, CT and US examinations of the body. This mission is accomplished by the dedication of the cross-sectional imaging attendings who are internationally known and committed to both resident and fellow education. Our department currently offers four different 12 month fellowships.

Fellowships

1. Cross-sectional Imaging Fellowship

The Cross-sectional imaging fellowship includes rotations in Body MRI (16 weeks), Ultrasound (12 weeks), Image Guided Biopsies (4 weeks), Body CT (16 weeks), and 3D Imaging (4 weeks). During the year, fellows work side-by-side with the attending staff and will be exposed to a spectacular variety of pathology. Fellows will learn how to protocol studies and will be involved with new imaging techniques (i.e. 3D imaging). In addition to the cross-sectional imaging, one day a week of general work is built into the program. This includes plain films and fluoroscopy. Between 8-10 cross-sectional imaging fellows are accepted each year.

2. Body MRI Fellowship

The dedicated Body MRI fellowship is an intensive 12 month clinical fellowship in Body MRI including musculoskeletal, cardiac, pediatric and chest, abdomen and pelvic MRI studies. In the course of the fellowship, the fellow will learn how to prescribe MRI protocols and will gain experience with new MRI techniques. One dedicated MRI fellow is accepted each year.

3. Clinical Cardiovascular Imaging Fellowship (RSNA Sponsorship)

Fellowship position available at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Department of Radiology beginning July 2008. Curriculum includes 6 months clinical training and 6 months of cardiovascular imaging research (1 year total). Johns Hopkins operates 4-64 slice MDCT scanners, 2 dedicated cardiovascular MRI scanners, 10 MRI scanners total.

M.D. applicants must be a graduate of a North American radiology residency program. Board-Certified or Board-Qualified in Diagnostic Radiology and must be eligible to obtain a State of Maryland medical license. Sponsorship is provided by the RNSA.

4. Musculoskeletal Fellowship

Musculoskeletal Radiology Section web site

The Musculoskeletal Fellowship is a one-year clinical and research program. The fellow participates in an intensive training program in musculoskeletal imaging which includes plain radiographs, CT and MRI of the musculoskeletal system, arthrography and percutaneous bone biopsy. The fellow will be involved in a variety of novel techniques (for example, MR spectroscopy and advanced MDCT protocols for the musculoskeletal system) and be exposed to enormously wide-ranging pathologies. The fellow partakes in weekly sports medicine and musculoskeletal tumor conferences. Education is further advanced by weekly didactic conferences and weekly MRI review conferences. Finally, fellowship training is enhanced by daily interaction with the orthopedic surgical staff and members of the rheumatology division.

The faculty is active in a variety of clinical and laboratory research projects in the fields of musculoskeletal CT and MRI, and a variety of evolving techniques for the evaluation of bone and soft tissue tumors. The fellow will have abundent opportunities for research.

Fellow Educational and Research Activities

At Johns Hopkins, there are many educational conferences available daily. In addition, a dedicated imaging fellow case conference is held every Tuesday evening from 5:15 - 6:15 PM. The conferences are given by the cross-sectional imaging attendings and include both didactic lectures and interesting cases.

There are no formal research requirements for clinical imaging fellows. However, there are many ongoing projects in the department and fellows are encouraged to participate, if interested.

Over 5000 musculoskeletal, thoracic and abdominal examinations are interpreted each year. Examinations are performed on a state-of-the-art Siemens Avanto 1.5 T scanner, 2 Philips 3T Achieva scanners, or 4 GE Signa LX scanners. Teleradiology examinations are also interpreted on a regular basis from community hospitals. In 2005-6, 3 new 1.5 T MRI scanners will be added, as well as 2 additional 3T Siemens scanners at the main hospital and outpatient center. Extensive clinical and research experience is offered on all aspects of body MRI.
